• From 2021, the European Union has set fleet-wide average emission targets for new cars to be 95g CO2/km or under. The previous target was set at 130g CO2/km and was reached in 2013, just a year after it was phased in.

    For this new 95g/km target, a similar phase in period will begin in 2020 and the emission targets will apply to 95% of the least emitting new car for each car manufacturer. The same targets will then be applied to all newly registered cars from 2021 onwards.

    If the average CO2 emissions of a manufacturer's fleet exceed its target in a given year, the manufacturer has to pay an excess emissions premium for each car registered. Until 2018, this premium amounted to €5 for the first g/km exceeded, €15 for the second g/km, €25 for the third g/km and €95 for each subsequent g/km. As of 2019, the penalty has increased to €95 for each and every g/km which exceeds the target.

    FCA Group, whose portfolio contains Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Jeep, have been struggling to ready themselves for the 2021 target and whilst they plan on selling hybrids and electric vehicles in the near future, the group had an estimated fleet-average of 123g/km in 2018. Come 2021, it had been forecast that FCA would be facing fines in excess of €3 billion.

    Under EU rules, car manufacturers are allowed to pool emissions internally, which allows the likes of Bentley and Porsche to have their emissions offset by other Volkswagen Group brands such as Skoda. This same rule also allows for rival companies to form ‘open pools’ and is an opportunity FCA Group have now taken by agreeing to pay Tesla several hundreds of millions
    to pool the companies zero-emission cars in with their own. In turn, this will reduce the entire groups’ fleet-wide average emissions and allow them to meet the 2021 target.

 

  • Diesel engines are being offered for the first time in the Audi ‘S’ Series. The new Audi S6 and S7, as well the recently replaced SQ5, will be offered with 3.0 V6 TDI engines when they go on sale in the summer this year.

    These TDI models come with a 48v mild-hybrid system (MHEV) to help improve fuel efficiency and are paired with an electrically powered compressor (EPC) to boost performance.

 

  • Euro NCAP released their latest safety ratings this week for the New Range Rover Evoque and Citroen C5 Aircross. The Evoque received a full 5 stars and the C5 Aircross achieved 4 stars, which raises to 5 stars with an optional Safety+ Pack.


  • Bentley has teased the new Flying Spur, complete with retractable bonnet ornament, and will be revealed later this year. The company says it is “innovating beyond the existing boundaries of performance, refinement and luxury with the introduction of an all-new four-door Grand Tourer”.
