The rates of the plug-in car grant, which gives buyers up to £4,500 towards the cleanest new cars, will continue throughout this month and at least until the end of April 2018.
The Department for Transport has previously advised that the scheme will continue until 2020 and new rates were due to be confirmed at the end of March 2018. However, any potential changes are now being placed on hold whilst the matter is further considered by ministers. A review is being conducted at present and more information is due to be available in due course.
Plug-in car grants will therefore continue as follows:
- Cars with CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km that can travel at least 70 miles without any CO2 emissions at all, the grant will pay 35% of the purchase price up to a maximum of £4,500
- Cars with CO2 emissions of less than 50g/km that can travel at least ten miles emission-free, the grant will pay 35% of the purchase price up to a maximum of £2,500*
- Cars with CO2 emissions of between 50g/km and 75g/km that can travel at least 20 miles emission-free, the grant will pay for 35% of the purchase price up to a maximum of £2,500*
*These categories do not include cars with a recommended retail price of over £60,000
